Le Guin’s “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, and sets up key themes that pluck the strings of the following 21 stories. The collection gives and gives and gives.įrom the opening story, “The Ones Who Stay and Fight” – Jemisin engages in a thoughtful response to Ursula K. Follow a budding kitchen witch in “L’Alchemista”, a queer Haitian spy in the steampunk-tinged “The Effluent Engine”, a stranded group of Muslim space voyagers in “The Brides of Heaven”. If you haven’t, it is still a pleasure to see her play with different characters and themes. If you have read any of Jemisin’s novels, you will see the seeds of ideas. ![]() ![]() It is generous in its breadth – after finishing each story I delighted on finding another, each of which so unique in setting and tone, from techno-dystopias to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, that I feel like I lived in 22 worlds.
